The Government of Andhra Pradesh has chosen Liberty Steel India Limited as the joint venture partner for construction and development of YSR Steel Corporation Limited’s steel plant in Kadapa district. Andhra Pradesh State Cabinet chaired by the Chief Minister Y S Reddy approved the allocation of 3,148.68 acres of land in Jammalamadugu mandal for setting up an integrated steel plant at a cost of Rs 10,082 crore and Rs 6,000 crore in phase 1 & 2 with a capacity of three million tonne in each phase. Liberty Steel would spend an amount of Rs 10,802 crore on building the steel plant.
March 31, 2024 is the date set by the YSR Steel Corporation for commencing the commercial operation for the phase-1 of the project and had set the target for production of one MTPA of crude finished steel products. AP government had invited proposals in November last from renowned companies for inducting as a joint venture partner for setting up and operating a new steel plant in Kadapa.
AP government had already signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with NMDC for supplying the required 4.5 million tonnes of iron ore every year for the proposed steel plant. However, linkages for other raw materials like limestone, dolomite, quartzite, ferroalloys, are still under progress.
The upcoming plant promises to adopt the latest green technologies to produce value-added steel products.
