Global crude steel output in 2019 rises 3.4 percent

As per data released by the World Steel, the global crude steel production for the year 2019 reached 1,869.9 million tonnes (Mt), an increase by 3.4 percent compared to 2018. The contraction in the crude steel production for 2019 was witnessed in all the regions except in Asia and the Middle East.

The crude steel production for Asia in 2019 stood at 1341.6 Mt, an increase by 5.7 percent compared to 2018. China’s crude steel production in the year 2019 reached 996.3 Mt, up 8.3 percent on 2018 and hence China’s global crude production share increased from 50.9 percent in 2018 to 53.3 percent in 2019. India’s crude steel production for 2019 reached 112.2 Mt, up 1.8 percent on 2018. Japan’s production was 99.3 Mt in 2019, down by 4.8 percent compared to 2018 whereas South Korea’s production in 2019 was 71.4 Mt, down by 1.4 percent compared to 2018.

The CIS produced 100.4 million tonnes, down by 0.5 percent. EU’s production of crude steel was 159.4 Mt in 2019, down by 4.9 percent compared to 2018. Germany produced 39.7 Mt of crude steel in 2019, down by 6.5 percent on 2018. Italy’s production in 2019 was 23.2 Mt, decrease by 5.2 percent compared to 2018. France produced 14.5 Mt of crude steel, down by 6.1 percent compared to 2018 and Spain’s crude steel production was 13.6 Mt in 2019, a decrease of 5.2 percent on 2018.

Crude steel production in North America was 120.0 Mt in 2019, down by 0.8 percent on 2018. The US produced 87.9 Mt of crude steel, an increase by 1.5 percent as compared to 2018. South America’s crude steel production was 41.2 Mt in 2019, a decrease of 8.4 percent on 2018. Brazil produced 32.2 Mt in 2019, down by 9.0 percent compared to 2018.

Russia’s crude steel production in 2019 reached 71.6 Mt, down by 0.7 percent on 2018.

Ukraine produced 20.8 Mt of crude steel in 2019, down by 1.2 percent compared to 2018.

The Middle East produced 45.3 Mt of crude steel in 2019, up by 19.2 percent on 2018.

Turkey produced 33.7 Mt in 2019, a decrease by 9.6 percent on 2018.

Africa’s crude steel production was 17.0 Mt in 2019, down 2.3 percent on 2018.

Oceania produced 6.1 Mt in 2019, a decrease by 2.9 percent compared to 2018.
