Metal World Insight is a premier news source & technological knowledge enhancement platform for the metallurgist, steelmakers, and material research students. It covers the insights of iron and steel industries and other industries associated with it (refractory, raw materials- iron ore, coal, etc).

Tundish Materials – Overview (Part-1)

Tundish shell: It represents the outer bone of the tundish. This is made up of high-performance manganese steel, which can withstand high temperatures (m.p -1500 oC approx). It has 25 mm to 30 mm in thickness. The tundish shell structure is tapered from top to bottom

Why does India import Steel?

In 2018, India imported 8.95 million metric tons of steel as compared to 8.89 million metric tons in 2017. The automobile industries require special grades of steel for manufacturing engine parts, exhaust pipes, and fuel systems. Imports of value-added steel, especially for the auto sector and high-end electrical steel were the major source of imports. Indian steelmaker does not manufacture special grades of steel and thus the domestic auto companies have to rely on South Korean and Japanese steelmakers for the supply whose percentage share has accounted for 47% of the total imports.

Reduction in corporate tax: Effect on steel sector

The Indian government is leaving no stone unturned to promote ease of doing business by reducing corporate tax rates and a slew of other measures that promise to boost economic activity in the country. It is a move that will lure the investors to bring in new projects which will lead to a surge in employment, promote manufacturing growth and spur consumption.

Steel picture looks enigmatic

The car sales plummeting more than 30% for most automobile makers due to weak economic growth and liquidity crunch. International Monetary Fund (IMF) has cut down India’s GDP growth projections to 6.1% for FY20. Weak global growth and trade tensions between the US and China make steel picture even more dramatic. RCEP negotiation with China, Australia, and New Zealand is round the corner and India’s further commitments with these countries will create panic among steel players.

Clean Steel – Overview of macro and micro inclusions

Inclusions less than or about 50 micrometer are considered to be micro inclusions and sizes greater than 50 micrometer are considered to be macro inclusions.

Thermo- Mechanical-Chemical analysis of ladle shroud when put into service

The wear is high in the neck region owing to shroud cleaning by oxygen but the impact and applied stress are low. Wear takes place on the inner side and bottom of the shroud, outer slag region and many other positions in the shroud but the cumulative action of thermal, mechanical along with chemical action is quite unlikely.

RINL signs an MoA with NRDC

Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd, the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel plant, has signed a memorandum of agreement with the National Research Development Corporation (NRDC), a technology transfer organization under the union ministry of Science and Technology to provide consultancy services to RINL in the filing of patents, copyrights, trademarks and design applications in India and as well as abroad .

Graphene- A Miracle Material : Use in Steel

The natural hydrophobic properties of graphene have the capacity to repel water from the surface of stainless steel fibers. In addition, graphene’s electrical properties reduce the likelihood of redox reactions occurring on the surface, preventing oxidation of the substrate metal.

Practices for better ladle refractory shroud life

premature failure of the shroud leads to open type unshrouded teeming of metal from ladle into the tundish. Unshrouded casting causes large amount of air entrapment and bath metal turbulence.

Tata Steel European Business Insight

The company planned to restructure its weak European operations, which have posted substantially low operating margins by signing an agreement with ThyssenKrupp AG but in May, the European Commission rejected the company’s plan to merge its loss-making European operations with the German conglomerate ThyssenKrupp.
